INVOC Club Membership Information

If you're totally new to the sport, we would be delighted to have you join us.  We're a family-friendly club, and whilst we do enjoy a bit of friendly competition, what really motivates us is bringing newcomers into our sport.  Orienteering is a small community, growing all the time - and those that get into it display a tendency to get hooked for life!

In May 2018 we co-hosted the Scottish Championships with one of our neighbouring clubs, with events taking place on the heather moors of Achagour and amongst the sand dunes at Roseisle.   The following week Royal Deeside was the venue for the British Championships.  These events help to increase the popularity of the sport in the area, along with providing a financial boost to the local communities.  This year the Scottish 6 Days event is taking place just down the road in the Strathearn area of Perthshire.  https://www.scottish6days.com/2019  We are very lucky to have so many wonderful events being held so close to home.  Our surrounding landscape provides us with such varied terrain in some stunning locations which are sometimes not accessible otherwise.

Why chose orienteering?

Orienteering is an all-round sport – it’s great for the body, mind and some of the scenery is good for the soul too.  You don’t need to be fit to take part – but it’s so addictive that you’ll probably get hooked, and get fitter.

Orienteering is an excellent family activity as there are courses to suit all abilities – from White (easy) courses for the little ones and beginners, right up to the highest technical difficulty courses of Blue and Brown (technically and physically more challenging).   It’s not always the fastest runner who gets the best time – you need to be running in the correct direction in orienteering to be accomplished.

Age categories range from 10 to 85, so it really is an activity for all.  It’s also a very sociable sport as there is always someone to discuss your course with afterwards – you will often hear participants asking each other “What route did you take to that Control?”.   Post-event discussions are a great way of learning different aspects of orienteering.
