Joining an orienteering club in Scotland means, in all but a few odd cases, signing up to the national bodies for the sport at Scottish and British level as well as to your club. It may seem a bit convoluted but it is the same with most other sports - and it does mean participants are directly linked to, and contribute to, the bodies that run the sport in this country. So when you join INVOC, you also join the Scottish Orienteering Association (SOA) and British Orienteering. To add complexity you can join British Orienteering as a Local or as a National member. Local membership is fine unless you go orienteering outside Scotland or go to major championships. As a Local member you'll be kept up to date with what is going on locally by email, and you also receive the SOA magazine SCORE and various British Orienteering mailings. SCORE is sent out every 2 months and includes all that is happening on the Scottish orienteering scene. National members also receive further British Orienteering publications and benefits, along with entry rights to British Championship events and discounted entry to events throughout the UK.
If you are new to orienteering you can join INVOC/SOA/British Orienteering as a Local member for their first year for FREE!! To take advantage of this you need to apply by post using the form available on the British Orienteering web site, www.britishorienteering.org.uk, or from Sue (see below). Fill out the form, send it to British Orienteering, and that is you signed up for the rest of the year! (You can join on-line via the British Orienteering web site, but last time we checked the free INVOC/SOA option for new members was not available.) Renewals for 2012: Current members should have received their 2012 renewal forms/information from British Orienteering. Please return these directly to British Orienteering. If you want to change from Local to National membership, or the other way round, amend your form as appropriate and send it to British Orienteering. Note the fees on the form are wrong - you should pay the fees as above, but.... Renewals: you can get a discount if you pay by Direct Debit. For more information please contact Sue Nicolson, membership@invoc.org.uk. |
